The present article is a preliminary report on the historical study of Fu-kien dialect.
The characteristic of Fu-kien dialect is that it has two sound strata i.e. the colloquial pronunciation (白話音) and the literary pronunciation (文言音). The former usually occurs in the basic morphemes and the latter in the relatively literary morphemes. After separating the phonemes into two strata and made the phonological classification of initials of modern Fu-kien dialect on the data obtained from informants, the writer tried to construct the phonological correspondences between initial phonemes of Ancient Chinese and those of modern Fu-kien dialect. All the results obtained so far are arranged in table 3.
