Gan-yu prefecture is located at the northeastern corner of Jiang-Su Province. The prefectural government is stationed at Qing-kou, the locus of several on-going sound changes.
The present study attempts to describe the tonal features found in a new variety of the Qing-kou dialect. In this dialect four types of tones are discriminated in citation forms, but they often undergo tone sandhi in non-final positions of utterances. Sandhi forms of tones are presented in Table 1. Ideolectal variations of tone values are observed even among the speakers of the new variety. Observations on the alternative prononciations reveal how the changes of tone values are progressing in the Qing-kou dialect.
